Sometimes customers notice that the reporting in these emails might look a bit off, and we understand why that can be alarming! For example, we certainly can understand why seeing metics like this might be concerning:

Since seeing that high of a spike in product adds and abandons is likely not humanly possible, let's uncover why you might occasionally see spikes like this, and why it is nothing to be concerned about!

Understanding Bots

These spikes are commonly caused by internet "bots" that perform automated tasks all over the internet.

Typically, bots perform tasks that are both simple and structurally repetitive, at a much higher rate than would be possible for a human alone. The largest use of bots is in web spidering (web crawler), in which an automated script fetches, analyzes and files information from web servers at many times the speed of a human. Adding and abandoning products on an eCommerce website certainly falls in line with the "simple and structurally repetitive" tasks mentioned in the quote above.

These bots are not malicious or placing your site in danger; they are simply monitoring your website performance and functionality. And it's not just your site seeing these spikes -- bots routinely crawl every website on the Internet every single day.

Uncovering The Root Issue

If you see a spike in data like in the example above, you'll need to do some more digging to see if the spike is an isolated incident or an issue that needs more attention.

In the example above, we can see that the spike occurred around December 17, so you'll want to look at that same date in the Reports tab of your Springbot dashboard. 

The first graph on the page is set to show revenue by default, but you can change this to adds or abandons on the left hand side.

Here we can see that the spike occurred in the few days surrounding December 17. Even though this was not a one-day spike, it is still an isolated incident since the spike is not repeated and does not last more than a few days.

In this case, the spike can be disregarded as an isolated incident. However if you do see trending, repetitive, or spikes that are consistent and last over many days or weeks, you should reach out to your developer or webmaster to ensure that your site is safe and secure and that your SSL certificate is up to date.

Where Else Might I See Spikes In Springbot?

You might see similar spikes reported in the recommendations you see on the homepage of your Springbot dashboard like this:

This is again related to bots creating a spike in cart adds and abandons, but just reflected in a different location in Springbot. If you see a recommendation with inflated information like this, we still suggest following the steps above to see if this is an isolated incident or a trending problem that needs to be addressed with your developer or webmaster.
